I was one of the millions of Americans who was truly grateful to sit in stunned silence staring at the television the night of September 11, 2001, and see a resolute, controlled Mayor Rudy Giuliani staring back at me, calmly answering questions. For that I, and plenty of other people, thank Mayor Giuliani. He provided steadfast leadership and a great example on a day when so many others in positions of power did not.
However, despite this tremendous demonstration of leadership and his record of “cleaning up” New York City, I cannot support him for president. No one, not even the mayor of one of the most prominent and complex cities on the planet can seamlessly go from being a municipal mayor to president of the United States. And that is what we need now an experienced leader who knows foreign policy and domestic priorities, who has wrestled major legislation through Congress, and who won’t face a tremendous learning curve transitioning from his current job (whatever that is) to the White House.
